The Evolution of a Phenomenon is often defined by specific steps.

1. The Grand Vision

A dominant personality or figureheads present a new and transcendent idea that promises a cure for disconnected individuals.

And so it goes. Plans are in motion to challenge the establishment down in Brisbane. The gunships are circling. Smoke is rising from within. One individual, naked, anxious, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT displayed prominently as a symbol, has stumbled from the field and is being led away under a blanket towards an inconclusive loan stint elsewhere.

Do you ever miss the start, when optimism reigned? The days of Bazball 1.0, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Initial Adoration

Team architects guarantee a fresh beginning, optimism ahead, love, redemption among a group united in belief in the method.

What was this thing back then? Players celebrating feeling good. Ink. Muscles. Jawlines. Confident masculinity. Admittedly, The squad insist it’s not a real term, amusingly since it’s not recognized, what exactly did I just watch?

Yet it’s clear its essence. It’s the batsman attempting a move so depraved it has to be pixelated. It’s the thrill of Ben Stokes in his final form, a demeanor suggesting: focused titan, strong features, natural look, truly contemporary you wouldn’t be surprised to glance over and find him positioned on the ground shirtless holding a fish.

It’s the opener still being allowed to talk in press conferences, appearing as a happy little woodland creature smartly dressed, uttering phrases such as we are actively deconstructing the orange. Indeed, the vibe, initially, was only good energy.

3. The Growth Phase

Building period. Cohesion maintained through repetition of the cult’s slogans. These beliefs can appear contradictory as a test of “true belief”.

Is it just me? The backlash, the outrage, the sense of betrayal following the initial loss seems too strong, unwarranted. The batting collapsed during the match, as is typical there. They were savaged in the field during a brief period as plans unraveled, outplayed by the batsman imitating their style effectively, adjusting to the pitch, a performer excelling with brilliance.

Currently, we see the pile-on, the rage, the perception of the team as a disgrace. The opinion suggests that England don’t just need to lose, they need to lose righteously, to be cleansed, obliterated, defeated through sheer skill of the bowler’s action, the simple basics of the bowler, out there celebrating his wickets with a bashful smile similar to getting a rewarding prize. What will this do to them?

4. The Backlash Phase

Challenges surface due to setbacks. However, faults are ignored. It turns to hatred of the outside world.

In truth, a few days before from the second Test, we have now reached an intriguing moment in the journey of this approach. They might succeed in the next Test in a blur of adrenal disruption. Alternatively, they could lose just as quickly. And if they do lose it appears we could be witnessing the final stage.

Before that happens, there are two things worth saying regarding this. More than two years ago, during the initial excitement, of light and heat, I wrote an article calling it a phenomenon. People were very angry, which proved the point because everyone knows how to confirm lack of cult status is when its acolytes respond with anger objecting to the questioning of the philosophy.

What has happened in the last few days are fascinating. Opposition to the style has now become the cult. Social media is furious, critical analysts, pictures of upset supporters abroad cheated out of three days of cricket, reminiscent of timeshare owners seeking justice.

Conversely, we have the wider backdrop of the opponent’s mixed deep-seated frustration at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, out there saying, hey, that thing you love and have honed as one way of separating yourself culturally from us, it’s just a joke after all.

And this is the real point. Everything is a cult. The approach was a phenomenon as the game has its own culture. Or rather, the sport in England is closed, a clique, a garden party, a closed world with centuries of tradition and mystery defining it. This has always been a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the colonial game of England, the early image-makers. And guess what, Britain is itself a cult, a structure of hidden ranks, a royal family remains.
